Rick Linden, sociology, received a University of Windsor one-year AUTO21 – Network Centres of Excellence Grant of $24,000 to study anti-social behavior and its connection to auto theft in Canada.

Lori Wilkinson, sociology, received a $122,588 grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to assist her in her research on labour market transitions for newly arrived immigrant youth to Canada.

Mary Connor, animal sciences, received a $93,344 grant from the Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Fund to evaluate commercial group sow housing alternatives.

Mario Tenuta, soil sciences, received a $130,000 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) grant to study the greenhouse gas reduction benefits of including perennials in cropping systems.

Qiang Zhang, biosystems engineering, received a one-year, $30,906 grant from the Canada/Manitoba Agri-Food Research and Development Initiative (ARDI IIIA) to evaluate solar energy greenhouses for winter greenhouse production in Manitoba.

Feiyue Wang, environment and geography, received $389,250 from the Manitoba Research and Innovation Fund to establish the Sea-Ice Environmental Research Facility, which will allow for the fabrication and growth of sea ice under various controlled conditions for microcosm-scale studies.

Fikret Berkes, Natural Resources Institute and Canada Research Chair, will work in collaboration with a colleague from the State University of Campinas Brazil having been chosen by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Canada Research Chairs Program for the IDRC in Community-Based Resource Management. Berkes received $1 million over five years to work with his counterpart in Brazil to increase food security and improve the livelihoods of fisher communities in Paraty in the Rio de Janeiro state of Brazil. The research team will develop approaches collaboratively with these fisher communities to better manage local resources and to help them diversify their sources of income.

Laura Targownik, internal medicine, gained international attention when she found drugs to treat acid reflux and peptic ulcers are linked to osteoporosis-related fractures.

John Walker, clinical health psychology, received $1.5 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to lead a team of researchers from across the country as they look at how young adults suffering from mental health issues make decisions about available care in the absence of critical information and helpful decision-making aids.

Rh Award

Digvir Jayas, Associate Vice-President (Research), was the 2008 recipient of the Dr. John M. Bowman Memorial Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation Award, which recognizes the accomplishments of senior faculty. During his distinguished career, Jayas has earned an international reputation for work that has shed new light on advanced grain storage methods and how they affect spoilage.



Seven young investigators received the 2008 Rh Award for displaying exceptional innovation, leadership and promise in their respective fields; James Blatz, Engineering; Struan Sinclair, English; Michelle Lobchuk, Nursing; Étienne Beaulieu, French, Spanish and Italian; Jessica Senehi, Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice; John Hanesiak, environment and geography; and Kiera Ladner, political studies were honoured with the award.
